I opened a Nikon 18-70 lens earlier and thought it might be usefull to show the steps here. With some tips it is a 20 minute job.
This is the one.

If the lens has a dust problem, do not unscrew the front lens, it will ruin the focus.
Take away the rubber on the zoomring by lifting it carefully
The rubber covers a small screw, take it out and save for later.
Move the lens to rest on the table with the front downwards
Turn the zoomring anti-clockwise until the small hole aligns with the switch. Now the zoomring can be taken off the upper part.

By pulling the front lens, the tube will extend to 70mm point.
Three screws that hold the tubus will be visible, check them for tightness and apply a drop of lockingfluid.

Now you can clean the inside with a small dust blower.
I used Qtips to clean both plastic rings and the felt ring on them.

Assembly is the other way around.
Put the lens on the table, front down. First align the inner ring in the zoomring.
The small rectangle must be in line with the hole in the zoomring. If right, you can see through the hole.

Lift both rings together (turn a little anti-clockwise)until they touch the upper part and unlock from the frontpart.
Turn both zoomring and inner ring until in line with the switch.
Push the bayonet downwards while turning the zoomring clockwise
Now the inner ring will lock with the frontpart again. Allow the lens to zoom out a little.
Align the hole and put the screw back in.

Clean and re-assemble the rubber ring.
Done.
Until the next project, Hans
