oh god... yes, youtube is a yuge time suck. I'm in BFE Tennessee now days. I have this hankerin' for some home made egg rolls or lumpia, but "ain't nobody in these parts got any of them egg roll wrappers". Nearest Asian market that's locatable via interwebs is over an hour away, and the specific egg roll wrappers I need are sold frozen, and need to stay frozen until ready to use... The logistics procuring these will mean $5 package will end up costing me $20 in gas, and at least another $10 in ice to make sure it stays frozen on the trip back. Sooo... $35 for a package of 25 egg roll skins.
So the other day I'm looking at the packaging online and see the ingredients are: flour, water, coconut oil, and salt. These ingredients are wicked cheap and readily available anywhere...
Enter google, youtube and 4 hours later, i have 2 methods of making "spring roll skins" which (what I really want) are really "popiah skins" as "spring roll skins" are traditionally made from rice paper, which I've also procured methods of making, and have watched at least an hour (in addition to the 4 hours of watching Popiah skin videos) of Vietnamese street vendors making spring rolls (rice paper kind).
now to try my hand at making some...
